If you don't have an exotic by mission/ Xur/ bounty then save your strange coins to buy the exotic weapon Xur is selling. Do bounties, heroic daily/ weekly when turning in bounties set the exotic weapon as your active to start upgrading buy the exotic shard(s) to fully upgrade and done. -Note- The Taken King may change how you can get exotics.
