By now, almost everyone has had something to say about the DLC whether it's based on opinion or just trying to flame someone. Instead of adding fuel to the fire, like IGN, I'm just going to tell my tale.
As I live in the UK I had to wait until the early afternoon hours to download, that all went very smoothly. I put in MW2 but there was no patch update...well that was odd. Anyway, I jumped onto the Stimulus playlist and couldn't find a game as the maps didn't load. People who hadn't downloaded the pack were also trying to get into games.
I knew that I needed the update so I played Perfect Dark with a friend online until he said the patch was out. So we both downloaded it and played some private games with other people. These all went off without a hitch, but still no luck with the public matches.
Normally, I'm not a Twitter person, I use it to get updates on things, but I prefer Facebook for contacting people. However, this day was different as Robert Bowling (important IW person) was asking for feedback and giving us constant updates on the situation. This is one vital thing that all websites have been missing! Just this morning there was an XBL employee asking for feedback on how they could make the matchmaking better, and yesterday they introduced the package into all playlists with double XP. I haven't seen customer service like this before, sure there are things that don't work but these guys are dedicated to fixing it and using the community effectively.
Now onto the price. There have been lots of complaints about this, mainly that it should be free like BC2. But from what I've gathered the BC2 maps were already in play and they just put them in different modes, I didn't even download anything. That's not so much DLC so much as shuffling a pack of cards IMO. Now I haven't played BC2 all that much so feel free to say if any of those maps were brand new, never seen before in the MP playlists.
But to bring this back to MW, we didn't get much value for money with the MW1 pack. We got two new maps that could be in all modes, one that was only used in certain ones and a remake of a COD2 map. I essentially paid 800MSP for 3 maps. I never saw the fourth level. But now I've got 3 new maps, 2 great older ones and I can use them all in TDM, which is my preferred mode. Yes, it cost more, but my money feels well spent. It's adding more value to a product that I enjoy. Do I wish it cost less or even free? Yes, I'd be lying if I said no, but I think the new map are great and revisiting Crash and Overgrown with all the new things IW included in this game is a great experience and those maps even feel new because of it.
These are my thoughts on the issue.
Just got this from a recent IGN article, that again rags on the map pack:
On-disc DLC is the popular new wrinkle on the same old gouge. Developers lock a certain amount of content on the game disc you already paid for, then charge you an additional fee to download an unlock code under the guise of buying the actual content. They don't mention this, of course, because it might sound suspiciously like they're cheating you. Which they are. Oh hai, Bad Company 2 Ok, so they didn't charge new users, but they did the pre-owned ones. You know it costs 1200MSP to unlock VIP mode?
