All Zombies Must Die!

A top down zombie action adventure

It’s zombies and more zombies for the killing as you play through this top down action adventure shooter. The controls are set up so that you move with the left stick and aim with the right stick. Holding down the right trigger is required to shoot. These controls are easy to master with some practice. You will be able to interact with objects by pressing the A button, which will be a good part of the game (aside from slaying zombies) as you search through different types of container for quest items, health, and ammunition. In addition to the basic controls there will be other functionality with the other buttons too.

I mentioned quest items above because the game is also a RPG in that you play as a character exploring different environments like the town police station, the mall, and the power station to name a few in this instance instead of traditional dungeons. As you kill zombies you will gain experience which you can use to level up your character’s attributes. You can build a glass cannon by throwing all your points into attack, but you better have agile fingers to maneuver through the different environments. Another way to go is to build a tank with lots of defense and health. There are other builds that you can create, it all depends on your play style. So as you can see the game plays as both a shooter and a RPG.

As you unlock new areas you will meet other playable characters that end up joining your party. They in turn will give you quests as you interact with them. There is also a crafting system that lets you build specialized weapons to kill zombies faster and easier. The game has many of the traditional gun types from the pistol to the machine gun, but there is one oddity in the form of a ray gun. Why a ray gun, well because one of the playable character is an alien. A strange choice on the developers part, but there it is for you to play. Melee weapons are also a choice in the game. You can craft two versions of each weapon type as well as character specific special weapons like a flame thrower.

The one part of the game that was lacking was the none voiced chats. It has some breaking the fourth wall dialog that drags this game down as the characters interact with each other giving out their specific quests. It’s cringe level inducing, luckily they did not spend any money on voice actors for this game. Reading through the dialogue was bad enough. When you get to the point that you add an alien to the group that does nothing but talk with gibberish I was pretty much done. It was really annoying and comes off as a low level effort until you have him run some quests to finally understand him. At which point he becomes a filthy mouth alien without the type of edge because the curse words are then hidden with characters. It was the worst part of the game and when you have it tied to the quest it gets eye rolling boring.

The game gets its name from triggering an in game event where you have to clear all the zombies (hence the name All Zombies Must Die!) from an area that you want to take it over and make it you base of operations. As you get through a good chunk of the zombies the remains zombies will then become enraged and will move a lot quicker then your standard zombies. Once all the zombies are cleared the area remains zombie free. The base will be usable to level up your characters, interact with the other characters for quests, and craft weapons. This game has a good range of zombie types. Like the sneaker zombies that spawn in the Mall area, these zombies move a lot quicker then the other zombies as their specialty.

In summation the gameplay can make this a fun game to play once you start to level up and create better weapons for the slaughter. More effort into the dialog would have been appreciated. It would have made the game more enjoyable. That aside the game has depth with some replay ability if you are a fan of the zombie genre.

  • I have to admit that when I started this game I had some preconceptions about what I was to expect from a game titled Firewatch. What I was expecting was some sort of forest simulator where you put out fires. That you would be working for the forest service as a lookout. Keeping an keen eye out for possible fires or smoke in the Wyoming wilderness. I also thought that I...

  • Before it arrived on the Xbox 360 in 2007, Carcassonne was first created as a board game in the year of our Lord 2000.
