Seriously, I am impressed. With so many people here having seen it right away, and no one posting any kind of thread (with or without spoilers)...

Wow.
So far, I know two camps on this film.

Group 1) Meh. It's just episode IV. Like, an exact carbon copy. With different names for the same things. (for some reason this group sees this as a negative, somehow)

Group 2) This is the Star Wars I have been waiting for. Thank *insert deity(s) here* for JJ Abrams and his vision.

Then there's the reasonable viewers down here:
This is a step in the right direction. JJ's "Soft reboot" of the series to try and undo the travesty that was the prequels had to be done. Following the formula of EP4 was a safe move to show people that yes, new SW movies can come out and be great. EP4 is a fantastic film, quite possibly the best SW movie out there. There's nothing wrong with having to "play it safe" with the first of a new trilogy. Especially with how the prequels went. Going with a known format will allow older viewers to feel comfortable with the new series, and allow newcomers to get invested with actual characters and emotions. The only real niggling issue is how the series moves on from here. This isn't about EP7 so much as it is about how EP8 picks up from here.

Where does this one fall in the timeline? As a kid I saw Star Wars, The Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi. I think there have been more movies since then (don't recall the hype though) but I haven't seen them. What would I need to watch in order for it to all make sense? In other words, the ones I missed...do they matter or does this fall after Return of the Jedi?

I'm not a full-blown Star Wars nerd but I definitely enjoyed the films in my youth so I'm guessing I'd like this one too.

Best Star Wars movie ever, if this was a SPOILER thread I would back that statement up. Not that I have to, it's subjective and my opinion is valid, but I'd still make a case.

This movie was the worst one in my opinion! I left the theater feeling really let down, I felt the characters were uninteresting for the most part, the environments were bland and dont represent Star Wars at all. The old characters that made a return should have stayed out of it(humans at least) especially Harrison Ford, he looked like a drunken mess. Everything that happened in this movie could have been a 20 min. intro and then lead into the real movie and what happens next! The very last seen is where this movie got my attention, the rest was garbage. The little soccer ball robot was worse than Jar Jar but my biggest complaint is how does someone trained in the force lose a fight to someone that is only seeing a light saber for the first time? cheesy! The force may be strong in her but its not instinct, training is necessary!

Maybe im just the opposite of most people but having read a lot of Star Wars novels the prequels had my interest story wise, I liked the development of how Aniken became DV, how Palpaltine manipulated everyone to become the emperor, the demise of the Jedi council. The bad guys were bad asses and not just mickey mouse temper tantrum spoiled brats!

I wish i would have gone and seen the Hateful Eight instead!

See. Two camps. Just like I told you.

That didn't take long. Do you feel better?

I can see the next movie being more interesting than this one but i have little faith. The super duper bad guy also? WTF? Dd they steal him from Marvel?

It actually didn't feel like part of the other movies at all to me, and one character really spoiled it for me, I just did not like that character...

(But, I have only shared that opinion before now with people who have seen it. I still advise people to go see it and probably enjoy it.)

Chewie's bowcaster = mini Death Star

I liked the new movie, I am a die hard Star Wars fan (I think Episode I is a great movie....if you read the book Cloak of Deception which happens right before TPM and yes I know that if you have to read a book to understand a movie it is not a good movie). Is it rehashing the themes and plot of the original trilogy, specifically Ep IV, which in turn rehashes a lot of Lucas' influences? Yes, and that's not a bad thing.

Adam Driver's whinny emo bad guy acting is light years far better than what we suffered through in II and III.

My only complaint is that what the OT trio's efforts and sacrifices appear to be in vain now. But I will see where this new trilogy leads and hopefully some of those efforts and sacrifices will be worth it.

Rey, who undoubtedly comes from a badass bloodline, who's father dumped her on a desert planet exactly as was done to him, was not fighting alone. Luke was helping her people, it's the fucking force! He was guiding her through the saber and when she embraced the force, he was able to take even more control. So Luke, not Rey, beat his sorry excuse for a pupil.

You know, her beating an injured Kylo Ren never bothered me. Not once.
