However, I do have a 2TB NAS in the basement with a media pusher on it (I think Twonky, but also another DLNA support service), and the Xbox One sees that drive, the music and movies on it, and plays it just fine.

My 360 played movies off of USB drives formatted for Windows. If I can stumble across a spare USB HDD around the house (not packed up, or not already employed with another task), I will throw a couple of movies on it and try, but I am 90% positive it will work because it works for music that way.
yeah i know it works with USB sticks with movies. and i used to use Tversity with my Xbox...
but i used my External HDD with my bluray player. so thats why i asked if XB1 can read from HDD, coz if it can I will only get a XB1...
coz I really dont wanna get a NAS just for my movies and series...

My gut says yes, it will, and it seems like I remember seeing it somewhere in the description for the media player app, but, I have not done exactly what you were asking, so, I could not say 100%. But, like I said, I may have a spare drive laying around.

Now, if you mean some external drive connection other than USB or NAS, then no. There are no other connection types.
