× 17 (32.08%) Yep, it was obviously self defense.

× 31 (58.49%) Yay, a poll that I can vote in!

Excellent news! I'm glad everything turned out ok for you.
Great news, probation may not be too bad at least it's no jail time.
That's great news, well not great (probation) but it's not jail. It's good they didn't confiscate your weapon and hit you with fines as long as the fines aren't too high, Hope the best looking forward.
I had to deal with the court once over damage charges but I got past it.

I had to vote no based on what you said, Porsche. You can't just go waving guns around, especially discharging them, without cause. Now I hope for all the best and I hope it was self defense and you are given leniency, but I'd be surprised if you got prison time over this. I trust (mostly) the courts, so when you do get through this, learn from it, move on with your life.

I'm rooting for you though.

It doesn't justify it, but i really dont want anyone thinking i was impulsive and aggresive. Theres over 100 pages ofmitigating evidence that removes me as a dangerous suspect, and all i was facing the unlawful discharge charge, the same one that drunk new years eve partiers that fire rounds in the air get.

The most important aspect is that the 'victim' recanted his statement after he heard mine. The guy is already on parole, and had to alter his story in a way that would not have him violating his parole, and the judge and prosecution didnt fully accept his story, since the evidence did not support it.

Inthe end, i took responsibility for what i did, and all 40 of my character witnesses testified that it was in my character to defend myself in a manner that would not cause harm to anyone. Basically, i am taking the fall for both of us, and after it was all done, the guy hugged me and thanked me for keeping him out of jail.

Crazy, right?

But thank you for your honesty, Lee. Most anonymous internet friends wouldnt be. I appreciate that. I have learned a whole lot from this situation, about a whole myriad of things, and that is ultimately the plan for me. Its become a positive thing.

Yes, I am totally okay with that. My other collector weapons are stored at someone's house in my safe over there. I sold all my pistols and ammo to them to pay the fines. I have a few rifles from WW2 era that worth quite a bit - they will be stored until I get my rights back.

I was getting into a pretty dark place last night considering everything, but seem to feel better today about it. I could have taken this to trial and possibly got cleared, but the risk of not getting cleared was too great, and my family needs me, so I accepted the plea. It will be converted to misdemeanors after probation is served, and I have a church friend who is in the state senate putting together a pardon for me. It won't erase the crime, but it will show a pardon on it, which may help things in the future.

It's been a hard lesson, but one I needed to learn.

People have to hear things they don't want to, it makes you stronger and keeps you from living in some safe bubble people create. As for your gun collection, like you said, your family needs you. The guns are just items, you can reacquire "things" later, just double down and be a great husband/father/brother/son. I'm glad things worked out and reinforced my faith that the right thing would happen in court.

Just glad to hear it all worked out in the end to be amicable for you both, hopefully this will show the guy that standing up and being civil about things is better than harassing and getting in to worse situations.
