I was trying to upload a background, the upload page says " The maximum size of your custom image is 3000 by 1000 pixels or 4.77 MB ", but I am only getting a sliver of my image displaying. What should my image height be as that is the part that is getting chopped? should it be 300 pixels?
I must have gone through 20 images before I found one that fit right.

I got mine to work fine the first try, but the other picture I wanted didn't show up as select able.

Well, I cannot speak to the requirement, but, no, 3000 HIGH would not be right. 3000 WIDE would be within the restrictions you gave.
I just did a test. I opened MS Paint, set the canvas to 3000x1000 pixels, did a fill in red, saved it as a .png, and uploaded it as my background. Everything went smoothly and without issue. So, I can confirm that it will accept a very simple 3000x1000 image.

Of course, a solid red .png image is only 10KB, so, I am well UNDER the size limit. How large is your image, and what file type is it?

I just uploaded a 1778 pixel High x 1000 pixel Wide image. Visit my profile and you can see it is being chopped. That is why I am thinking 100 x 1000 is the better size. Can we expand the viewable height in out profile?

The viewable space for your image is 1354x122 in the upper section, and 1354x249 as the total image. And remember, you are listing your ratios backwards. You would usually say 1000x1778, wide x tall. So, to display properly, you would want to use an image in the 5.4:1 ratio. Basically, if you want it to display properly, is needs to be 5 times as wide as it is tall. So, 1778 Tall is more than the 1000 tall limit (3000x1000), and 778 pixels will be cut off, and to make the ratio properly, would need to 9606 pixels wide.
Looks like an adjustment has been made to the background images. My entire image is now visible.

Edit:

I just logged into the site from an apple laptop and there is no background image on my profile. Does everyone else see my image or is it not showing up for others as well?

Status changed to 'Logged' - I plan on putting together a guide for profile backgrounds. I've found larger images work best since the site has to scale the image according to the user's viewport (desktop, tablet, mobile). Still working on the ideal dimensions though.
