Declined

For the record, Google was nothing. Then Aol, because of inter-company spats, ditched MS search engine and switched the client browser from IE to Netscape (which Aol bought specifically to do this).

Google grew through the roof.
Netscape was spun off as Mozilla, with seed funding from Aol.
MS didn't care, and the world continues to think of Aol as "dialup"

This is my world.

My company is a tragic story of total mismanagement. You have to understand, I've been there since 1996 and I've seen all the mistakes, most go back to the Time Warner 'merger'. Which is called a merger only for politeness, Aol bought them. We traded $180B in shares to merge the companies. If there is any doubt, the stock ticker afterwards was AOL, not TWX. Why did we buy Time Warner?
  1. Broadband. We wanted to move everyone over to broadband and Time Warner cable gave us a huge footprint to start with.
  2. To offer books, magazines & newspapers online - years before Kindle
  3. To add the Warner Music group music to our Music streaming channels - same time as iTunes/iPods
  4. To offer streaming movies/tv - yes, well before Netflix ever streamed anything, before Hulu existed. Btw, we owned HBO and TW refused to give up this huge cash cow. Just NOW, 15 years later, they are offering HBO Go.

All of those things were way ahead of anyone else, and we had the people, knowledge, and infrastructure to do it. But you know what stopped it? People. Time Warner people, old media people, who HATED us young internet upstarts that were eating their lunch. Saving Warner Music from bankruptcy was one of the first things TW did with our money. They didn't share the online digital vision of the future and fought us every way.

"But you bought them, who cares what they want?"

First if you asked that, you've never been involved in a merger. But there are two main reasons why it failed so badly.
  1. Case was cocky with the SEC, and the government wanted us to grovel and be more humble about creating our "monopoly". As a result, SEC approved the deal, only if we didn't do anything with the broadband for 2-3 years (I forget exactly) so cable companies could build up and compete. Also they declared "instant messaging" a utility, that we had to open up. They declared it like if ATT customers couldn't call Verizon customers. AIM & buddylists were a competitive advantage the government just declared we had to open up. NOW these things exist everywhere (like XBox live messages I mentioned earlier) and no one cares.
  2. Case was trying to play nice with the board of directors. In a board of 12, he only took 3 spots instead of ensuring he had majority control. Sure he was the Chairman, but doesn't matter if you're outnumbered every meeting. He was trying to be respectful of all the stuff TW built and thought he could make them see the vision of distributing their content.

Funny thing is, after TW pushed out everyone from our board, used our money to save their failing businesses, they spun us off and in the vast majority of American's mind we are nothing more than synonymous with the sound of a dial-up modem.

Edit: correct we started with 5 members on the board, but those guys were quitting like crazy because of the hostile work environment and were replaced with TW picks.

It seems strangely appropriate in this thread for me to remember back to my days of sitting in a call center doing tech support for AOL. Dial-up was wonderful in the sense that people couldn't test out your support fixes without first disconnecting the call so their computer could dial in. Sadly, it happened daily where people would try to connect to AOL while still on the line and I'd have to sit through a modem screeching in my ear. Ah, good times. (badge unlocked)

I'm glad people are able to follow the clues. Hopefully, like the other mystery badges, no one blabs the explicit step by step details and leaves some mystery to it (although you could say I've already done exactly that. Fortunately very few have caught on so far).
