Dead Rising (Xbox 360)

(untitled review)

When I first saw “Dead Rising” I was moderately excited. I didn’t plan to get it, I just needed something new and a game involving a huge zombie killfest was the only new thing on the market.

You follow the story of a journalist who gets trapped in a mall full of zombies for 72 hours. One interesting feature is time. For example “get to place (x) by (y)”. If you are late you miss the event, so you need to keep an eye on you watch while playing. You can even choose to do nothing and just sit the whole thing out.

You can acquire a vast array of weapons to mow down the zombies with and it can be quite satisfying at first but pretty soon you realise your just killing things with no mind and any challenge that existed is swept away. Sure the golf ball thing is fun for about a turn but after that it doesn’t even warrant a hearty chuckle. When you first get into the game you’ll be searching for every new way to plough through the mindless drones but once you’ve exhausted that it’s pretty much over. You have to travel through them to get to everywhere and in itself that becomes a mission so when a real mission presents itself you can’t really be bothered.

The graphics were nothing amazing, the sounds were nothing new and although all the new gameplay aspects were shown off nicely it just didn’t warrant the price tag and you wondered why you got the game. Certainly not the story so much as the zombie bashing which can relieve stress as much as it can enhance it.

No need to buy this game now as RE5 will soon be in our hands. It tries its hardest but it just doesn’t make it as a decent purchase if you’re looking for a game to show off your new next gen machine. It could have been a B rated PS2/Xbox game but to have it on the 360 isn’t anything special.

Its just a really average game that will amuse and entertain a you for the best part of an hour but beyond that you're better of looking elsewhere.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
