Unreal Tournament 3

(untitled review)

(Based on PS3 version)

I had always wanted an Unreal game on consoles and was more than happy when Unreal Tournament 3 was announced for 360 and PS3. The game is developed by the same studio that gave us Gears of War and as that still ranks as one of my favourite games I was excited for this.

However all I got for my £40 was a Gears of War FPS clone. The characters have the same looking armour as the Locust give or take the colour and it’s constantly trying to look gritty. I wouldn’t normally have a problem with this but I was expecting more creativity rather than a re-run of a much better game.

There is a single player mode but it’s the same as MP so there’s no real point in going into it. You are here for the MP. While I was pleased that the matches were larger than previous online games it was held back by lag and the maps weren’t really suited for more than 8 players if you wanted decent run around time to collect weapons and collect kills. You could be cannon fodder in seconds of re spawning.
There is offline MP and even that can be fun by turning up the difficulty setting and not suffering the lag. The NPCs also help in carrying out objectives which can make your job easier.

The game design does hold together though. The graphics are impressive; the sounds go well with the weapons. Level designs are varied, including a couple in space which I found enjoyable.

I’d say wait for a price drop first, no matter which version you plan to buy. It is playable and can be fun. The PS3 version has access to all the mods the PC gamers have while the 360 version comes with a few extra maps and in my view a better Live service. I’m not going to say if that alters the lag as I have no idea but my games on Live have always been better than on PSN. If you have both consoles it would more be a matter of “what controller” in my view.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
