Soul Calibur IV

(untitled review)

So it’s been a while since I picked up a Soul Calibur or even just a fighting game. Normally I stay away because I feel that paying out £40 for a game where all you do is mash buttons until the other person falls over and repeating that process until your fingers fall off is a waste. However Soul Calibur was the first fighting game that made me think differently. Sure the voices are terrible and the announcer may as well be the announcer from Timesplitters less fortunate inbred brother and the male characters are all built and the female characters all have massive boobs and ridiculous catchphrases bombard both sexes BUT.....it’s one of the most fun games ever!

Nothing much has really changed and the changes that are noticeable don’t really change anything unless one character has the ability to nullify ring outs which I feel is slightly unfair. However if you mash the right buttons you’ll find yourself a sweet victory anyway. Speaking of which you have to be careful of timing and placement. Miss once and things could end badly as Darth Vader found out this morning as he got beaten by a blonde girl resembling a maid in a suite of armour. I was obviously Vader. Yeah I got the PS3 version but apart from Yoda there is no real difference, graphics and I’m sure controls are the same. The PS3 feels familiar as I played SC2 on PS2 so the controls and moves came back a bit easier. Plus the PS3 version can be installed to give a slight cut to the loading times but not much else.
There is a ridiculously easy story mode that adds pretty much nothing. The Tower is a great addition where you get money and unlock treasure chest as you move up. And if you clear 20 levels you can move down. So prepare those fingers as health does no replenish after any fight. However as you progress in stages you can select new characters. The tag team aspect brings back memories of Tekken Tag .

You can also create your own character and buy new weapons and armour as you progress. You can also use this character for online purposes.

If you’ve been waiting for a fighting game then this is the one to get. It’s easy to pickup and versus mode and the new inclusion of online adds more depth.

One big hops is that both exclusive characters will become DLC. And beating Darth Vader never gets old. Hers hoping for some epic Vader/Yoda battles in the near future.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
