Rare Replay

Terrific game with a goldmine of GS

This game is terrific. All in all, there is 10,000 gs up for grabs with Rare Replay. Yep, ten thousand. The game itself only lists 4,000, but included with the game are download... vouchers, I guess? So in addition to the 4k available in the base game, you also get Jetpac Refuelled, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, and Perfect Dark, each of which are worth 200gs, Viva Piñata and its sequel, Perfect Dark Zero, and Kameo, each worth 1000gs, and Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, which is worth 1250 gs for a grand total of 10,050 gs. Now, sure, you probably won't get all of that. A flawless run of the Battletoads hoverbike level? Forget it. Buying extra equipment for two achievements on Viva Piñata TIP? Not likely for most people. And so on and so forth. Who knows, maybe you've got the patience for the full 10,050, and if you do, I bow down to you. But even if not, you're looking at several thousand gs for a game a lot of us got for free. What's not to love?

As for the games themselves.... there's some real trash in there. It's fun to play the games in chronological order and see the evolution of games over time, and I honestly think that may have been my favorite part, even for a completionist like me. But the first part of the timeline is rough. It's not hard to see how there were real questions regarding whether or not video games would survive out of the 80s. Fortunately, you get some awesome cheats and save states that smooth out the difficulty curve and let today's gamer who's been spoiled by checkpoints, infinite lives, and replay value driven by story and exploration rather than raw unforgiving difficulty find their way through these early 80s exercises in masochism. There's plenty of videos and artwork related to the history of Rare for those who are interested in that, too.

Overall, this is a great, sprawling compilation, and it's clear the designers put a lot of love into it rather than just slapping together a collection of roms with the most basic navigation menu they could find (looking at you, SEGA).

With this many games available, I think I can honestly say I'd recommend this game to absolutely everyone. Shooters, RPGs, racing games, adventure games, fighting games, platformers, it's really all here. Pick it up, you won't regret it.
