Unravel

A cool little platformer with puzzle elements

Unravel is a cool little platformer with interesting puzzle elements and mechanics. You play Yarny, a character made of yarn that unravels as you progress through each level. The character can unravel to a point that it can no longer move forward. However there are points in each level that will replenish the yarn letting you move forward. This is where is gets interesting as sometimes you do not have enough yarn if you anchor (by trying knots) at certain points in the level. So you have to backtrack and figure out how to move forward.

The game has fifty five collectables made of yarn (I am beginning to see a pattern here), which come out to about five per level. Finding them are fairly easy with a few being well hidden or placed in rather strategic locations in some levels. It can be a little challenging getting these as well as completing each level without dying. Challenging in this sense that it is a fun exercise and not a pull the yarn out of your head impossibility. The level designs and progression mechanics work real nice in conjunction with the diverse environments. The levels and graphics look beautiful as your character makes its way through the world.

Keeping track of the collectibles and not dying is also real easy. You only need to look at the picture frame that is tied to each level. The music is another well executed element in the fabric of this game, although at times it can be somber. There is no real story in this game. You sort of collect and experience memories as you run through the levels. So there is no cohesive story. These memories feel more like fragment or it’s more likely something that has been lost in translation from the Swedish developers. This is in no way a negative, as the story doesn’t take away from the rest of the game which is a good deal of fun.

  • I have to admit that when I started this game I had some preconceptions about what I was to expect from a game titled Firewatch. What I was expecting was some sort of forest simulator where you put out fires. That you would be working for the forest service as a lookout. Keeping an keen eye out for possible fires or smoke in the Wyoming wilderness. I also thought that I...

  • It’s zombies and more zombies for the killing as you play through this top down action adventure shooter. The controls are set up so that you move with the left stick and aim with the right stick. Holding down the right trigger is required to shoot. These controls are easy to master with some practice. You will be able to interact with objects by pressing the A...

  • When you think about the stealth genre in gaming Splinter Cell is one of the games that will immediately come to mind. Conviction is the second installment in the series on the Xbox 360 (fifth overall if you are counting the games on the original Xbox) that is based on Tom Clancy’s character Sam Fisher. There are books based on the character as well and just...

  • Unpacking, it’s a simple task that has been turned into a digital title for the Xbox One. It is a very easy game completion that will increase your gamer score by a good 1000 points. This is a perfect game for little kids as it can be satisfyingly fun organizing your belongings. Parents could make this game a learning moment as well for all those kids...

  • Before it arrived on the Xbox 360 in 2007, Carcassonne was first created as a board game in the year of our Lord 2000. Interestingly enough the board game was named after a real fortified city that sits on a hill in the south of France and it shares the same name as the games. 1755048507319226772 All three have a commonality that says it’s the Middle Ages.
