Mass Effect

(untitled review)

I love a game with story. Mainly because it shows that the dev team have taken the time to come up with something exciting or at least something to immerse you in a different world.

Mass Effect looked to be one of the deepest games of all time. That is if you like interactive novels. It's like this. Imagine a date that is filled with conversation, not enough action and when the action is over it wasn't very good and you wish you'd stayed with the talking which was torturous enough. It's like all the characters are tuned into the History Channel as they insist on burdening you with their stories. Now I know what I said earlier about story but this game took it too far.

You play as a person known as Shepard and you can be a male/female and choose your first name, not that it makes any difference. You can also choose a history which some other NPCs reference .

The action was a very poor imitation of Ghost Recon and your team mates or squad if you want to be picky get in the way and don't really justify their existence unless you want a chin wag.

The graphics were impressive but there was a framerate issue that seemed impossible to avoid. Some of the planets you visited were just barren wastelands with no scenery and that space tank thing was tricky to control.

I was expecting a game like Oblivion in space with Gears of War combat and i was needless to say a bit underwhelmed. Even the first level looked really undesirable and bland.

This game should have been much more. I was really looking forward to it until I actually went out to buy it. For some reason you just felt compelled to continue the story, the side quests just didn’t catch my interest. Plus I actually wanted the story to go somewhere so I kept playing it but only to find that I was wrong and I was just doing another errand to fill the time until something “important” happened.

That’s another thing. During the game you get made a super special agent called a Spectre. That sounds cool but I feel that it should be further along the line as it just seems like a handed down thing when it’s meant to be really elite.

Overall, not my thing but it seems to be one of the Marmites of the game world. I prefer games with a good mix of story and action rather than a focus on one thing.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
