Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

(untitled review)

Mercenaries 2 plays exactly the same as the first. You will obviously play Mattias as he is the most awesome and you will spend most of your time mowing down the enemy faction while blowing stuff to Narnia. The story is nothing amazing, it’s your standard betrayal plot and you want to kick some ass.

Before that you need to make connections, to make cash and then get to the real ass kicking. As the first game was bundles of fun you can expect the same with this. If you enjoy destruction and being a one man killing machine then look no further. This will keep you occupied until a new, bigger release.

The graphics are very pleasing on the 360 and there is pretty much no difference if you were going PS3 except your controller will feel different. Sure there’s some extra light here and smoother edge there but who cares? You want explosions and plenty you shall have! You even get a decent portion in the opening mission. Oh, and pretty much everything can be blown to bits.

The script isn’t anything out of the box but it suffices for the game. It’s not meant to be taken seriously an isn’t trying to, you will hear some of the same lines over and over but if you’ve spent any time with games you should be used to that by now even with the top sellers. The guns sound great as do most of the sound effects, haven’t got anything bad to say so far.

The gameplay revolves around fetching contracts, doing them, earn cash, repeat until game done. If you just want to get through the game. But dotted around are fuel tanks and cash to steal with your handy Irish pilot and places to takeover and destroy so even after the story there are some additional objectives and free roam as well.
The game didn’t hype itself up so I was impressed with what I got but I admit that I never really took the time to read up on it. It isn’t going to revamp any genre but it’s a solid game that will put some life into your console and get it ready for when Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 hit shelves.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
